CRAIG STRIPLING TRAIL RIDE, OCTOBER 5TH
Craig
Stripling is having an informal trail ride Saturday October 5th.
Since some of his most recently planned larger trail rides were rained
out, he isnt going to the effort and expense of providing food and
beverages. Hell merely provide the trail facilities for what he hopes
to be a turnout of about 30 riders. Riding will be from 9:30 a.m.
1:30 p.m. and should cover about 12 miles or so. Call Craig evenings at
936-564-7719 if you wish to attend as he prefers to have an accurate
headcount. He will give you instructions as to how to get to the
property.
PARELLI CLINIC DEC 14-16
Sharon
Lindy, a 3-star Parelli Instructor, will be giving a Level 1 Clinic in
Houston on December 14th-15th
and will conduct individual Workshops December 16th.
Sharon specializes in gaited horses, as she owns gaited horses
herself, and even did a clinic in Ohio that was totally Paso Finos.
Officer Greg Sokoloski, who trains the HPD mounted patrol horses, has
taken lessons with Sharon and recommends many of the training techniques
she teaches.
The
clinic will be Saturday & Sunday, about 9am-5pm each day. Sharon
starts with a lecture and demonstration, then participants will practice
what they have just learned. After a lunch break, the format is repeated
on another technique. Participants for the clinic are limited to 10.
The
Workshop allows Sharon to work with individuals on specific techniques.
Participants are limited to 10 per day and the session lasts about 3
hours. You do not have to participate in the clinic to take a workshop,
but experience with a previous clinic or auditing the clinic is HIGHLY
recommended. If there are enough people who sign up before October 1st,
we will be able to extend her stay thru December 10th and add
an additional day for more Workshops.
The
fee to be a participant in the clinic is $300 per person. Each workshop
is $110 per session and auditing is $30/day or $50 for multiple days.
Information
on the Parelli method of training can be found at www.parelli.com.
SIRE RIDE
OCTOBER 19TH
News
from Dianne Burghart: SIRE, a theraputic riding program here in the
greater Houston area, is having their 10th Annual Ride-a-thon
Saturday, October 19th, at the 7iL Ranch in Cat Spring. SIRE
is an excellent program which helps the physically & mentally
handicapped and also aids in rehabilitation of the injured. This program
works with children and, I think, adults, too. You pay to ride using
pledges or donations you have gathered or you can just pay it yourself. You
can also gather pledges as a team I believe if you have a group to go.
Maybe TxPFHA could be a team???? I saw a T-shirt from last
years ride and it sure looks nice. Contact Harla for more information

NEWS ON
THE RODEO BOOTH FOR 2003
Mickey
Beddingfield is coordinating a new booth for the new rodeo exhibit hall
for 2003. Those who have expressed interest in helping so far are Terri
Williams, Selena Foster, Laurie McGrath, Donna Beddingfield, Kitty
Harvey, & Gail Keller. Wed love to have more help. We are looking
at a new design and we also need help organizing a farm directory for
distribution at the rodeo. Please join the team by contacting Mickey via
email mickey@smalldreams.com
or phone 713-516-3415.
In
a disappointing note, we were almost able to have our first joint effort
with PFHA by having the Paso Fino Village exhibit at the Houston Rodeo.
We were so excited at being able to extend the hand of friendship to the
national organization. Unfortunately, the Rodeo has a height limit for
all exhibits of 12, and the Paso Fino Village exhibit is 16 tall.
So, it doesnt look like well get to see the Paso Fino exhibit at
the Rodeo in 2003.
GENDER
IDENTIFICATION IN THE WOMB?
By Martha
Wells
So,
you hauled your mare to be bred and she came back confirmed in foal.
And, of course, you are anxious to learn what sex the foal is. Why not
try the old 'weighted string' method; people have been using that method
for hundreds of years.
I
have no idea if it's accurate or not. Your horse is going to think
you're downright silly, but it's no more outlandish than any of the
other zillion things you do to her or around her.
And midwives have been doing the same thing to pregnant women,
using her wedding ring as a weight.
Tie
a small weight like a washer or screw onto a piece of string and hold it
over the mare's spine. Wait a few minutes and the string will start to
move, either in a circular motion or in zigzag pattern across her spine.
If it goes in a circle the foal is a filly and if it zigzags, it's a
colt.
The
problem is, the string doesn't know if it's telling you this pregnancy
or a prior one so you have to wait it out. If the mare has had other
foals, the string will run through them all to get to the one it's
currently 'reading'. I knew my Arabian had one filly born to her when
she was about 8 years old. She came to me bred so I tried the string on
her. It said 'filly, filly, filly'. Now, she has actually had 3 filly
foals at this writing but at that time she was working on #2, so who
knows?
To
try to apply science to this old wives procedure, there may be some
solid reasoning behind it. We all have electromagnetic 'fields' that
surround our bodies. Some people who are trained or just more sensitive
to these fields (or auras) can usually detect them. This string method
may actually have some basis in fact due to that aspect (the same as
water witching and other 'unexplained phenomena').
In
truth, if you really want to learn the sex of the foal, there are
certain 'windows' of opportunity when an ultrasound can detect foal sex.
Between day 80 and 100 of formation, if it's a male, it can be seen.
(Thats IF it's laying in the right position, and IF nothing jiggles
or jumps and the legs aren't bent toward the belly, then you MIGHT be
able to detect foal gender.)
So,
if you have a confirmed pregnancy with your mare, enjoy the 'down time'
with her and plan for a healthy active foal no matter what sex it is.
You're going to love it anyway!
MESSAGE FROM
THE PRESIDENT
Fall
is coming! And there are lots of fun things planned for Paso Fino owners
to participate in! There will be a Parelli Clinic right here in town.
Its a great opportunity to learn the games that horses play, and
learn how to win them. The instructor were bringing in was specially
chosen because of her experience with gaited horses. We also have the 2nd
Annual TeenAngel Charity Fun Show the 1st weekend in
December.
And dont forget to support Craig Striplings ride! Im
truly looking forward to cooler weather and a great winter of
activities!
Peace
& Love,
Gail

hand Bay Puerto Rican Paso Fino mare
Rosie is a former
lesson horse that Craig Stripling bought from Cathy Starbuck-Ledbetter
about 6 years ago for his son to have as his first mount. Rosies now
21 years old, but shes still the energizer bunny- smooth, biddable,
well-gaited, exceptionally well trained. Rosie is an excellent mount for
any child or beginner and she could be outstanding for any adult rider
who is under 150 lbs.
